About Me
I’m Ruth — a mum, partner, triathlete, and coach who knows what it’s like to juggle training with the realities of everyday life. Between raising a teenager, supporting a self-employed partner, working full-time, and navigating the ups and downs of menopause, I’ve learnt how important it is to find something that’s just for you. For me, that something has always been sport.
My Triathlon Journey
Since childhood I’d dreamed of representing Great Britain. Athletics was my passion, and I competed at county level through my teens, but this dream faded with injury at university. Life moved on, with work and family taking centre-stage. It wasn't until my mid-40’s, when looking to rediscover my mojo, I started swimming again.
A school-gate conversation led me to a swim session at the local triathlon club. I persuaded a friend to come along, took a deep breath, and walked into a whole new world. I met a welcoming community, heard stories that sparked my curiosity, and before long I was training for my first triathlon. That first sprint race in 2019 was nerve-wracking and exhilirating in equal measure – and it hooked me completely.
A year later, I dared to dream bigger. I set myself the goal of qualifying for the Great Britain Age Group team in Sprint Triathlon. With the help of a coach, steady progress, and a lot of determination, I achieved that dream in 2022 and stood on the start line at the World Championships in Montreal. Since then, I've proudly represented GB several more times, and my own journey as an athlete continues to evolve.
My Coaching Journey
Alongside racing, I found myself drawn to coaching. When my local club needed more coaches, I stepped forward, initially just to help out. But what started as volunteering quickly became a passion. During the pandemic, I completed my first British Triathlon Federation qualification, and post COVID threw myself into coaching for my club.
I've since gained my Level 2 Diploma and built a coaching practice that combines technical know-how with empathy and real-life understanding. What I love most about coaching is helping others to dare to follow their triathlon dreams, whether that's a performance goal, completion of a challenge, or simply to get fit and enjoy the journey. This can mean a heady mix of structured progressive training, confidence-boosting and technique sessions, and introductions to new people and places.
I work closely with each athlete to create a plan that not only fits their goals but also respects the realities of their life-jigsaw. With strong links to a sports physio, nutritionist, bike fitter, swim stroke expert, and strength coach, I also connect athletes with the right support at the right time.
